Biography

City Boys are a Japanese City Pop cover band based in San Francisco, California. We also cover english and chinese language music. Nevin, Bernard, Ilia and Chloe met at Japanese karaoke bar, Mogura and expressed interest in playing music. Even though every member has diverse taste in music, we thought City Pop music would be most fun to play, since we had met in the context of a Japanese bar. It is also a style of music we individually do not usually play, so the genre presented an interesting challenge for everyone. They then met Steve at a friend's birthday party in Golden Gate Park. We chose the name "City Boys," because in Japanese it sounds like "shitty boys."

In that it is based on new music, which can be said to be a Japanese hybrid of rock and folk, city pop has the aspect of being a uniquely Japanese arrangement of Western music (particularly American music). There is no fixed style of sound, and it is sometimes said to have "no clear definition," "ambiguous definition," and "referring to a mood rather than a genre. "An important element of city pop is that it is ``urban'' and ``sophisticated''music. The main feature is that it was sung exclusively in Japanese.
"City Pop" is a term that was added later for commercial benefit, and city pop may not have
been considered during the production process, so it is often used to explain the musical
intentions of musicians at the time. Care must be taken in the use of terminology.
